10th Anniversary
More than 40,000 runners ages nine months to 87 years old celebrated #10YearsRunning while Pittsburgh hosted the USATF Half Marathon Championship for first time
The 2018 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon celebrated its 10th anniversary by setting new records in participation and sustainability. The weekend of events, held May 4-6, also successfully hosted its first national championship race.

“We celebrated our 10th anniversary in the best way we know how - by bringing together participants of all ages and abilities and showcasing the the strong community spirit of Pittsburgh,” said Patrice Matamoros, P3R CEO and race director of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. “We thank and applaud everybody who made this year’s event so special with all their support, enthusiasm and participation.”

PARTICIPATION
More than 40,000 runners ages 9 months to 87-year-old participated in this year’s weekend of events and represented 25 countries and 49 states. Saturday’s family-friendly races continued to grow with a record of 15,000 participants. 

GNC Live Well Pittsburgh Health & Fitness Expo
  • This year’s GNC Live Well Pittsburgh Health and Fitness Expo had more than 74,000 visitors.
Saturday’s races
  • UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run – event record of 4,362 runners 
  • Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon – 6,400 kids from more than 130 schools and organizations throughout Western Pennsylvania ran the final mile of a 26.2 mile training plan as part of the Kids of STEEL program; plus, several thousand parents and adults participated.
  • Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot - event record of 528 participants
  • Rachael Ray Nutrish Pittsburgh Pet Walk - 144 dogs and cats and their owners
Sunday’s races
  • DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon – 4,601 runners
  • UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon –15,293 runners
  • FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Marathon Relay – 1,048 teams participated
  • Pittsburgh Marathon Handcycle Division presented by PNC -- 24 finishers
STEEL Challenge
  • An event record of 1,756 runners earned a special bonus medal for completing the STEEL Challenge - running the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run on Saturday, May 5 and then completing any of the three races that took place on Sunday, May 6. 
COMMUNITY

Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America
  • 2,500 charity runners raised more than $1.3 million dollars for charities through the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America. 
Sustainability
  • 94% of the waste generated by the event was diverted from the landfills, an event record.
  • 35,598 pounds of waste was either recycled, reused or composted after the race.  
FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Corporate Challenge
  • 28 corporations participated in this year’s FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Corporate Challenge, an event record.  
District Duel/Media Match
  • For the fourth consecutive year, District 8 won the District Duel title with a FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Marathon Relay time of 3:22:14.
  • Out of four teams, WESA-FM won this year’s Media Match competition with a FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Marathon Relay time of 4:09:10. 
PROFESSIONALS
The races offered a prize purse of more than $142,000 total. For the first time, P3R hosted the USATF Half Marathon Championships and and top runners in the country competed for an event record $85,000 in guaranteed prize money, including $15,000 for the U.S. champions. Also, 18 athletes earned bonuses based on their finish times in the USATF Half Marathon Championships and nine athletes qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.
