Finally! The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events is just around the corner.

In case you haven’t heard, Guardian Protection is the Official Smart Home Security Partner this year. Being a part of this awesome Pittsburgh tradition has really underscored how important it is for us to give back to our community.

As part of our Guardian Cares initiative, we organize fundraisers, food and clothing donation drives, activities for individuals with special needs, and more. These efforts are happening all year long, and it’s one of the best parts of being in the Guardian family!

Service should always start in your own backyard, so staying closely linked to the communities where we live and work is an essential part of our mission to make life safer and more connected. By frequently interacting and sharing information with our friends and neighbors, we can not only spread the word about the importance of safeguarding what matters most but also share tools and tips on how to do it.

STAYING SAFE EVERYWHERE YOU GO
In a recent guest post for the ‘Burgh Blog, we discussed some tips to keep your home safe when you’re away — whether you’re out training for the marathon, on vacation, or just at work. But of course, the need for safety stretches far beyond the walls of your home. Measures should be taken to keep yourself and your family safe everywhere you go — especially if you have little ones with you!

There will be thousands of runners and spectators on race weekend, and believe us, it’s going to be exciting! Crowded events with tons of activity may tempt a child to wander off or just slip out of your site, even when parents are watching like a hawk. But does this mean you should avoid fun outings like race weekend altogether? No way! Instead, arm yourself with the best info possible so you can enjoy these events with confidence.

Sometimes knowing how to respond in an emergency is as important as preventing one. That’s why Guardian will be offering its free GuardianKids ID program in the Guardian Protection Family Security Zone at the Finish Line Festival!

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN
Child safety is a focal point of our community outreach. While the greater Pittsburgh area is extremely diverse, we all have something in common: We need to feel safe, and we need to know our kids are safe. Missing children isn’t a topic people want to think or talk about, and we understand. It’s more than scary; it’s a nightmare come to life. But child disappearances are very real, and the numbers are impossible to ignore. According to the FBI, there were more than 32,000 records for missing children under the age of 18 at the end of 2017.

There are amazing organizations who work tirelessly for this cause, and at Guardian Protection, we want to do our part too. We know when a child is in trouble, every second counts. Providing law enforcement with as much information as possible, as quickly as possible, makes a difference. In such a terrible situation, it’s very common to forget basic details the police will need right away. Our GuardianKids ID program lets parents keep this information in their back pocket.

Guardian Protection has hosted complementary Kids ID events for more than two decades. The program is a free community service that gives parents the opportunity to have their child’s fingerprint and photo taken using state-of-the art equipment. The GuardianKids ID badge preserves essential information about your child that can help authorities safely, quickly and accurately identify them in an emergency. The photo and fingerprints are printed on a wallet-sized ID card for parents to keep, which gives parents one more layer of safety when out and about with their families.

Guardian has provided the Kids ID program at pre-schools, community festivals, crime watch events, health centers, fire/police department community days, neighborhood block parties, National Night Out events, and even at public venues like the local zoo. We estimate that our trained Guardian employee volunteers have ID’d more than 14,700 children since 2005.
