This past Saturday nearly 400 determined runners braved the cold weather to join us for our annual DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Kickoff Training Run. Despite the low temperatures, spirits were high as runners set out on their 17-week training journey. Led by Steel City Road Runners pace leaders, participants ran 4, 6, or 8 mile along the scenic Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
Before the run, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Dee Stathis, P3R COO/Director of Operations and Marketing, made a special announcement that the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon charity program would hit an important milestone this year. The program will raise an impressive $10 million since its inception in 2009. Kudos to all charity runners who run for a reason!
DICK’s Sporting Goods kept runners warm throughout the event with their “Ignite the Fire” runner’s lounge, which included fire towers, hot chocolate and coffee. Free sponsor giveaways were also available from GNC, UPMC Health Plan, NuGo Nutrition, Honey Stinger and Rachael Ray™ Nutrish®.
Ian Shreckenganst, Brooks Guru Field Representative, offered tips on how to train for the cold weather, including the importance of continuing to run outdoors even though treadmills may be cozier and the advantages of running with a group. He also gave runners the opportunity to “test drive” a pair of Brooks shoe during their run.
New runners had the opportunity to seek advice and ask training questions from Steel City Road Runners coaches and mentors. Offering weekly training runs and pace groups, the club is a great resource for local runners. For more information about the Steel City Road Runners, click here.
The Pittsburgh Marathon Kickoff Training Run succeeded in helping runners start their training on the right foot. The next weeks of training are going to fly by. We can’t wait for the main event on May 7!
Missed the kickoff event? Save the date for Saturday, Feb. 4 for the annual UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon Kick-off Run at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
