May 3, 2019 proclaimed “Patrice Matamoros” Day in the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County; DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation donates $11,000 to the Kids of Steel Program in Patrice’s honor

PITTSBURGH – In celebration of her final race weekend as CEO and Race Director, P3R (Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc.) honored Patrice Matamoros for all the work she has done to inspire a “running renaissance” in Pittsburgh on her final race weekend. Recently recognized by Women’s Running as one of “15 Women Changing The World Through Running,” Matamoros is thought of as both a business leader and a game changer by many within the City of Pittsburgh and the running industry.

During the Race Weekend VIP Event, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald proclaimed May 3, 2019 as “Patrice Matamoros Day” in Allegheny County through a video announcement. Mark Rooks, Vice President of Sports and Marketing at DICK’S Sporting Goods, presented Matamoros with an $11,000 donation to P3R’s Kids of Steel program from the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation. In addition, race directors from across the country shared their well wishes and noted the legacy Matamoros left on the City of Pittsburgh and the running industry in a tribute video.
“The imprint she has left over the last 10 years when the marathon came back again has taken us to not only national prominence but also international prominence,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “We are naming today, May 3, 2019 ‘Patrice Matamoros Day’ in Allegheny County. That honor doesn’t come to very many people, but you are certainly deserving of that. We want to thank you for all the great work you have done.”
A three-time high school cross country state champion and nationally ranked collegiate runner, Patrice Matamoros was devastated when an injury prematurely ended her running career. Thankfully, Patrice was able to make her way back to the sport she loved — without really running — when she joined P3R in 2008 to help relaunch the Pittsburgh Marathon after a five-year hiatus.
Since that time, Matamoros has led efforts to grow the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon from an event with no runners, no sponsors, no staff and no volunteers to an eclectic race weekend of seven different events, along with a health and fitness expo, that now includes nearly 40,000 runners, more than 50 sponsors, 27 staff members and more than 4,000 volunteers each year.
“The past 11 years at the helm of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and P3R can only be described as the ride of a lifetime,” said Matamoros. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve nearly 500,000 runners since our humble beginning in 2009.”
With Patrice at the helm, P3R has evolved into much more than the group that successfully relaunched the Pittsburgh Marathon. The organization has expanded to organize a year-round calendar of events, as well as host several health and fitness activities and programs for the community. Plus, P3R is now recognized as event-planning experts that businesses and organizations throughout the region consult and partner with for running and endurance events.
“Back in 2008 when we asked Patrice to lead the relaunch of the Pittsburgh Marathon, we could not have imagined all that she and her team would accomplish,” said Chip Burke, P3R Board President. “We’ll be forever appreciative of her hard work and dedication to the running community.”
For her exceptional efforts, Patrice has deservedly earned numerous awards and other recognition. In 2013, she was honored as the Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year and recognized for her leadership for successfully staffing the Pittsburgh Marathon just weeks after the tragic bombing at the Boston Marathon. She was also inducted into the Robert Morris University Sports Management Program’s Hall of Fame in 2014; was named a Woman of Excellence by the Pittsburgh chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE) in 2017; and earned a Women’s Leadership Award from Running USA in 2018.

It has grown each year since, evolving from a single race day into a weekend of events for the whole family that annually attracts nearly 40,000 runners.
