It really depends on what else is going on in the City of Pittsburgh during race weekend. Sometimes there’s some wiggle room that can allow for a little extra time on the course in addition to the 16-minute-per-mile pace limit. Sometimes, though, there’s not, and if you’re unable to maintain the overall pace, you might be asked to move to the sidewalk or board the sweep vehicle. Just to make sure we’re being 100% clear, the 16-minute-per-mile pace limit means you just need to average a 16-minute mile throughout the whole course. If you are walking and the first mile takes you 18 minutes but it only takes you 14 minutes the next mile, that’s still an average of 16 minutes per mile.
Asking you to move to the sidewalk or board the sweep vehicle is absolutely the last thing we want to do. At P3R, we don’t care whether you’re running a 6-minute mile or walking a 15-minute mile - we’re just thrilled that you are MOVING and doing something good for yourself.
Due to the back-to-back schedule of events on Saturday morning, we are unable to include an official walking division. That being said, we have always welcomed walkers to the Pittsburgh 5K Run. The 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, and all participants will need to cross the finish line by 8:30 a.m.
