Half Marathon Q&A

  • The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon have a zero-tolerance drug policy. Athletes with positive drug test results will forfeit any prize money and will be disqualified from the event in which such athlete participated.
  • You must use a race-issued clear Gear Check bag (which you can get at the Health & Fitness Expo) and corresponding Gear Check tag (attached to your bib).
  • Luggage bags, oversized or overnight items, loose articles, or bags that are not race-issue will not be accepted at Gear Check
  • Do not check valuable items such as medication, jewelry, cell phones, cameras, electronic devices, etc. The event is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.

It really depends on what else is going on in the City of Pittsburgh during race weekend. Sometimes there’s some wiggle room that can allow for a little extra time on the course in addition to the pace limit. Sometimes, though, there’s not, and if you’re unable to maintain the overall pace, you might be asked to move to the sidewalk or board the sweep vehicle. Asking you to move to the sidewalk or board the sweep vehicle is absolutely the last thing we want to do. At P3R, we don’t care whether you’re running a 6-minute mile or walking a 15-minute mile - we’re just thrilled that you are MOVING and doing something good for yourself.

The elite field is by invitation only. Acceptance into the program is not based solely on time. Entry is based on recent performance, potential finish, and the discretion of the Elite Athlete Committee. Please contact ryan.hogan@p3r.org if you would like to be considered for the elite field.

To qualify for a seeded runner position, you must provide a URL with race results meeting the following requirements:

  • Seeded male: 6:30 minute/mile or under
  • Seeded female: 7:29 minute/mile or under

Results must be for a half marathon or greater race distance in 2024-2025 calendar year(s).

If you would like to be considered for a seeded position, please include your qualifying URL when you register. If you do not provide qualifying race results, you will not receive a seeded position. The seeding deadline is March 15, 2025. You will be notified near race weekend if your team has been approved for a seeded position. There are a limited number of seeded spots available. Decisions will be made based on finish times and then registration date. If you have any questions, please email us at info@p3r.org with the subject line “Seeded Runner.”

To be eligible for elite entry or prize purse at any P3R event, an athlete must:

  • Not be currently serving a suspension for use of a banned substance*
  • Not have ever served a ban for use of performance-enhancing drugs*+
  • Not be represented by coaches and/or agents who have had two (2) or more athletes receive such suspensions in the previous four (4) years (from the current year’s race date)*
  • Provide proper documentation proving they are eligible for prize money (Form W-9, W-8ECI, or W-8BEN)
  • Consent to random drug testing according to the standards and procedures of USATF, USADA, and WADA

*A list of athletes who have received a sanction for a doping violation under the athlete’s international federation rules and/or the USOC Anti-Doping Policies can be found here: https://www.usada.org/ and https://www.iaaf.org/athletes/athlete-representatives/directory.
