PITTSBURGH  - The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the Hall of Fame Committee are proud to announce the 15th class of inductees to the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame. The 2023 inductees are Freddie Fu, Greg Fredericks, Chris Gibson and Kristin Price. This induction ceremony will take place during the 2023 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events on May 6.  

FREDDIE H. FU: The late Dr. Freddie Fu is recognized worldwide for his innovative research and teaching in sports medicine. Fu was the long-time chair of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Fu’s research and practice primarily focused on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, clinical outcomes and bioengineering of sports-related problems.  

Fu improved the lives of countless health sciences students, alumni, trainees, patients and friends during his long and storied career. He devoted countless hours inside the hospital but also within the community. Fu was instrumental in aligning community leaders and resources, attracting tens of thousands of elite and recreational runners from all over the world, for the first City of Pittsburgh Marathon in 1985. Fu also founded the Freddie Fu Cycling Team in 1998, a team that supports the marathon weekend by riding alongside the handcycle participants and other participants. Fu continued his work with the Pittsburgh Marathon Medical Team and served as the marathon’s board chairman and executive medical director until 2003.   

GREG FREDERICKS:  A Penn State University graduate, Greg Fredericks’ impressive running career includes a second place finish in the 10,000 meters at the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials, making the Olympic team that unfortunately did not compete because of the boycotted Moscow Games. He also won a U.S. championship in the 10,000 meters in 1972, setting an American record of 28:08.0, and was the 1975 U.S. cross-country champion. At Penn State, he had career bests of 13:34 for 5,000 meters and 28:03 for 10,000 meters. Fredericks currently lives in State College, Pa., and coaches cross country at Penn State University.    

CHRIS GIBSON:  Since 1980, Chris Gibson has been a prolific runner, completing more than 225 marathons and ultramarathons. He has won 30 ultra marathons, including JFK 50 Mile (four times), Knickerbocker 60K (four times) and Del Passatore 100K (two times) and was named the New York City Road Runners Club Ultramarathoner of the Year in 1987 and 1988. He was the fourth American and placed 16th overall in the 1990 100K World Championships.  

Gibson was the founder and race director for the GNC 50 Mile Run/100K National Championship in Pittsburgh from 1992 to 2001. He has been the head coach for several marathon charity program teams, including the Western Pa. Team in Training Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Urban Impact Foundation. In his 25 years of coaching, he trained more than 2,000 runners and walkers to complete a half or full marathon while raising more than $500,000 for their respective charities. Gibson currently resides in Pittsburgh.  

KRISTIN PRICE: As a high school athlete at Penn-Trafford, Price won the WPIAL Class AAA title in the 1,600 meters and finished third at the PIAA Track and Field Championships. She continued her running at Virginia Tech, where she was named the Virginia Tech Rookie of the Year and set seven school records before moving to North Carolina State University to finish her college career. In all, she earned nine NCAA All-American honors - two in cross country and seven in track - and won the 10,000 meters at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2009.  

In 2009 Price returned to Pittsburgh to run the inaugural DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. She crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:36:33. She also won the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in 2010. Her other marathon wins include the 2006 Columbus Marathon, 2007 Philadelphia Marathon and 2009 Richmond Marathon. Price currently resides in Holly Springs, N.C.

The Pittsburgh Marathon was held annually from 1985-2003. After a five-year hiatus, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon was relaunched in 2009 and debuted with a sold-out field of 10,000 participants.
