Training Tips: The Jeff Galloway Run-Walk-Run Plan


Carl Lewis, once said “it’s all about the journey, not the outcome.” Now, Carl Lewis won nine Olympic gold medals, so has fared pretty well in regards to outcome, but his words could not resonate more with runners.

Very few runners remember the finish line. It’s usually a blur of exhaustion and chaos, trying to move down the chute towards the closest cup of water and snack. Most runners remember the journey: the months of training, waking up at 5am, long runs on weekends, short runs during lunch breaks, group runs with friends, carbo-loading, the times you fell and, most importantly, the times you got back up.

This journey is what Jeff Galloway believes everyone should experience.

Marathon training plans can be tailored to meet the needs of any individual but the trick is finding a plan that will work for you. Jeff Galloway is the author of one of the top selling running books, Galloway’s Book on Running and his “Run Walk Run” program has helped millions of people cross the finish line. His accessible plans have opened up the life-changing experience of finishing a distance event to almost anyone.

Jeff Galloway was a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic team in the 10,000 meters and an alternate for the marathon. He has been running for over 50 years and is the founder and owner of Phidippides, a running specialty store in Atlanta that has been around since 1975. Galloway knows running and he knows how to get people to the finish line. Over 350,000 people have reported achieving their goals thanks to the run walk run program.

Galloway’s program consists of two 35-40 minute runs per week and one longer run on the weekend. This low-mileage plan makes training for distance races slightly more accommodating, which is part of the reason people find Galloway’s methodology so appealing. 

Pittsburgh’s premiere running club, the Steel City Road Runners (SCRR), offers the Jeff Galloway training program to prepare runners for EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon.
