11 Tips to Keep You Safe on Your Training Runs, Presented by Wesco
As the official safety partner of the 2023 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, Wesco wants to help keep you safe while you log miles and get one step closer to the finish line in May. Below are 11 tips on how to keep alert and stay safe on your upcoming training runs.
Be Aware.
Make sure you are well aware of your surroundings. If you're listening to music, only use one earbud so you can hear what’s happening around you.
Run again traffic.
Run against traffic so you can see vehicles coming near you.
Run with a friend or running group.
Running with a group increases your safety. If you are traveling, find a club to run with. Check with local hotels about safe running routes.
Check the weather.
Runners train and run in lots of different weather - especially if you’re training in Pittsburgh! But, if it’s icy or lightning, stay indoors.
Be visible in the dark.
Wear light colors with reflective materials. Wear a blinking light on both your front and back. If possible, don’t run at dusk or dawn - it’s hard for drivers to see you!
Obey traffic signals
Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right. Also, don’t assume a driver is going to stop - wait until they are fully stopped before you cross!
Vary your routine.
Select various routes and times when you run so your routine is not too predictable when running alone. Be thoughtful about what you post online about your routes.
Have your ID and cell phone with you.
Your ID will help identify you in case you find yourself in an emergency situation.
Track your run.
Track your run and consider sharing your location with a family member or close friend so they know where you are.
Plan, plan, PLAN!
Plan your route ahead of time. Make sure your route is well-lit, and you can see other people.
Trust your intuition.
If something feels off, turn around and find a safe place to continue.
