Mental Health Monday: The Importance of Rest
Rest these days can be hard to come by. Many of us are frequently on the go-go-go. Between working, school, parenting, and other life demands, it can be a challenge to find the time to be still and rest, but taking time to rest is a crucial part of our overall health and wellness. Rest does not necessarily mean to sleep or to do “nothing.” Rest means giving our body and our mind attention and compassion for all of the hard work we take on in our own lives.
Whether we are running, biking, or chasing after the dog or kids, adding a day of active rest can be beneficial for all of us. When we are at rest, our bodies will recover and become stronger. Sufficient rest gives our nervous system an opportunity to regenerate, recharge, and restore our bodies’ energy supply. Here are six of my personal suggestions for those necessary rest days ahead:
- Stretch or participate in a yoga practice
- Take a few deep breaths throughout the day
- Pick up that book by your nightstand and read a few pages
- Say no to social media for a day
- Go for a walk. Bring your dog or a friend
- Watch a funny movie (laughter counts as core work and it releases endorphins!)
Rest can be anything we want it to be that fits into our lives. The important thing to keep in mind is that resting is equally as important as the activity itself. Taking the time to pause and show gratitude in the present moment will continue to keep us healthy and prepared to face the days ahead. Relax and enjoy!
