2024 Run for a Reason Charity Program, Presented by KeyBank, Raised More than $1.3 Million for Local and National Charities

07.09.24

PITTSBURGH, PA –   P3R proudly announces that the Run for a Reason Charity Program, presented by KeyBank, achieved remarkable success during this year’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events. Participants rallied together, raising more than $1.3 million. Since its inception in 2009, the Run for a Reason Charity Program has contributed over $17 million to local, national, and global causes.

“The Run for a Reason Charity Program exemplifies the power of community and collective impact,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “We’re grateful for the unwavering support from participants, event partners, and volunteers who make a difference in the lives of countless individuals through their generosity and dedication.”

A record-breaking 4,063 charity program participants inspired 14,549 donations across 46 official charities. Notable beneficiaries include:

  • Urban Impact: $94,051.36
  • Cystic Fibrosis: $64,352.94
  • UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation: $63,891.12
  • ALS Association Western PA Chapter: $50,597.02
  • American Cancer Society DetermiNation: $50,286.47

The program’s impact extends beyond numbers. Arlen Janét, this year’s top charity runner, raised over $28,000 for the UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Sixteen years ago, Arlen donated part of his liver, so his daughter, Alaina, born with biliary atresia, could receive a life-saving liver transplant at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Janét’s unwavering commitment to the Run for a Reason Program spans 11 years, resulting in a total of more than $180,000 raised for UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation directly benefiting the UPMC Children’s Hospital Transplant Research Department.

Janét shared, “The donations from this event support groundbreaking research on biliary atresia and predicting chronic liver rejection after transplantation. We’ve funded 600 DNA kits for global sample collection and contributed to the development of the FDA-approved blood test, Pleximmune. It’s an honor to support an exceptional hospital that saved our daughter’s life and continues to make a difference.”

Charity runners once again came together to celebrate the impact of their efforts at this year’s KeyBank | UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh BACK Half Marathon. Exclusive to charity runners, the 13.1-mile event in the second half of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon course provided a red carpet experience, unique medals, and special race day bibs.

“We are proud to support the Run for a Reason Charity Program, which has made a significant impact on local and national causes,” said Vic Laurenza, KeyBank Western Pennsylvania Market President. “Together, we can create positive change and make a lasting difference in our communities.”
