PITTSBURGH, PA (May 4, 2024) – “Family Day” at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events broke records with more than 20,000 participants crossing the finish line. MOVERS of all ages participated in five events, which included the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K, the first-ever U. S. Steel Pittsburgh Champions Mile, Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, and Pittsburgh Pet Walk.

“Today marks a monumental day in the history of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events. With a record-breaking turnout of over 20,000 participants, we’ve witnessed an extraordinary display of community spirit and a passion for movement,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “From the youngest toddlers earning their first medal at the Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot to the seasoned athletes setting new personal records in the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K, every stride taken is a testament how this weekend unites and inspires.”

A record 4,500+ crossed the finish line in the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K. Andrew Zentgraf, 27, from Oakmont, Pa., was the men’s champion, breaking the tape in 16 minutes, 11 seconds. 2023 UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K champion Kartik Kannan, 22, of Pittsburgh, secured second in 16:56, and Ethan Robinson, 20, of Chester Springs, Pa., placed third in 17:45.

In the women’s 3.1-mile race, Grace Fritzman, 15, of McDonald, Pa., broke the tape and finished in 18:51. Pittsburgh resident Elaina Tabb, 32, finished second in 18:52, and South Park, Pa. resident Courtney Sweeney, 36, finished third in 19:39. For a complete list of 5K results, click here.

More than 140 crossed the finish line in the first-ever U.S. Steel Pittsburgh Champions Mile. This untimed, inclusive event welcomes everyone to join in a celebration of inclusion, joy, and bravery, supporting families and friends living with disabilities.

The one-mile Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, which started near PNC Park, drew more than 13,000 kids and their parents and guardians. Pittsburgh Steelers players Jaylen Warren and DeShon Elliot, as well as several mascots such as Iceburgh from the Penguins, Pirate Parrot and Chick-fil-A cows, were on hand to motivate the kids at the start line.

Many of the kids celebrated their “last mile” of the Kids of STEEL program, which is currently in 266 schools and organizations throughout western Pennsylvania. During the program, participants are challenged to move the equivalent of 25.2 miles of physical activity, and then they complete the last mile of their “marathon” with this morning’s event.

The Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, which was held at the Finish Line Festival powered by Cleveland Brothers in Point State Park, was also a place of pure joy and laughter as more than 500 toddlers ages five months to four-years-old participated in their first race and earned their first medal alongside their parents.

Later at the Festival, Pittsburgh Pet Walk ended the day on a high note as more than 200 humans and their four-legged best friends covered a one-mile course in Point State Park. The walk raised $4,000, benefiting Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, one of Pennsylvania’s largest non-profit organizations dedicated to the welfare of animals, pet owners and the community.
