Ideally, begin your marathon training 16 to 20 weeks before race day and your half marathon training 12-14 weeks before (if you're a beginner). This timeframe allows you to build endurance gradually and reduces the risk of injury.
 
If you're already a seasoned runner and regularly committed to running longer distances, you can probably choose a shorter training plan.
