2016 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame Class
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the Hall of Fame Committee inducted Rich Bogaty, Beth Bonner, Gary Brown and Barb Fultze as its eighth class of inductees to the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame.
This class was inducted during the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events.
Rich Bogaty
Rich Bogaty graduated from Plum High School (1973) and Edinboro State College in 1979 (now Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania); he currently resides in Plum, PA. Rich qualified for the 1980 and 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. He became a member of the powerful Allegheny/Nike Racing team in the early 1980's, a team that won the title at the 1981 Boston Marathon. Rich ran his Personal Best with a 2:16:35 during this race. He ran the Pittsburgh Marathon in the late 1980's, placing best in 1987 with a 2:19:26 and an eighteenth place finish. Rich won the 1979 Shamrock Marathon with a time of 2:21:22, he also won the 1983 Charlotte Observer Marathon with a time of 2:20:27. Rich is now a retired Biology teacher for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, where he coached track and cross country at Peabody High School.
Beth Bonner
Beth Bonner graduated from high school in West Virginia and Brandywine College (1974). Beth ran for West Penn Track Club in the 1970's, at a time women were just starting to run road races and marathons. In 1971, at the age of 19, Beth ran the Philadelphia Marathon in 3:01:42. That same year, she was the first female finisher of the New York City Marathon, setting the American record with a time of 2:55:22. Sadly, Beth passed away in a biking accident in 1998. In 2008, Beth was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Distance Running Hall of Fame.
Gary Brown
Gary Brown graduated from South Hills Catholic High School and Point Park College (1974); he currently resides in North Huntingdon, PA. Gary has made his mark on Western PA running as the founder and Director of the East Allegheny 5K for 18 years and the former White Oak 5K. When the Pittsburgh Marathon got its start in 1985, Gary began volunteering for the event as an USATF official. By the mid- 1990's, Gary had the lead role in the Marathon's Relay race and course coordination. Gary has been a part of the Pittsburgh Marathon with all four race directors from 1985 to 2003. Gary has been the Course Director from 2009 to present. Gary has also been a PIAA Track and Field official for the past 28 years.
Bob Filutze
Barb Filutze graduated from Villa Maria Academy, and currently resides in Erie, PA. Barb broke 52 age group records over her career and finished 50 marathons, 44 with sub-three hour times. She was elected to the USATF Masters Age Division Runner of the Year in 1986 and 1987 for the 40-44 age group, and in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 for the 45-49 age group. Her 45-49 8k age group record of 28:03 was held for 12 years (1993-2005). Barb was named Runner’s World Racer of the Year in 1987, and was elected to the USATF Masters Hall of Fame in 2005. She qualified for and ran in the 1984 US Olympic Marathon Trials in Olympia, Washington finishing in a time of 2:43:48 and in the 1988 trials in Pittsburgh, PA, finishing in a time of 2:46:53.
