“Family Day” Sets New Records at 2023 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events
PITTSBURGH, PA – “Family Day” at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events featured a record of 17,500 participants. MOVERS of all ages participated in four events, which included the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K, Chick-fil-A Kids Marathon, Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, and Pittsburgh Pet Walk Fueled by Pro Plan.
“We celebrated our 15th anniversary in the best way we know how - by bringing together participants of all ages and abilities and showcasing how this event is for everyone,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “We couldn’t have asked for better weather to celebrate with all of today’s participants as they crossed the finish line and earned their medal.”
A record number of nearly 5,000 participated in this year’s UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K. In the women’s race, Allie Guillard, of State College, Pa., broke the tape in 17:07, setting a new women’s record by eight seconds and finished second overall. Danielle Emmett, of Irwin, Pa., finished second in 18:38, and Pittsburgh resident Julia Ghil finished third in 19:34.
Pittsburgh resident Kartik Kannan was the men’s champion, breaking the tape in 16 minutes, 22 seconds. Michael Schueller, of Bethel Park, Pa., secured second in 17:23, and Geoffrey Cohen, of Pittsburgh, placed third in 18:03.

The one-mile Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, which started near PNC Park, drew 7,000 kids from 220 local schools and organizations and their parents. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher David Bednar and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Chad Ruhwedel, Pittsburgh Passion team members Makai Chavez, Amanda Haeg, Sissy George and Maddie Miller, as well as several mascots such as the Pirates Pierogies, Chick-fil-A cows, Steely McBeam, Pirate Parrot, Iceburgh, the Washington Wild Thing and AMO from the Pittsburgh Riverhounds were on hand to motivate the kids at the start line.
Many of the kids celebrated their “last mile” of the Kids of STEEL program. During the program, participants are challenged to move the equivalent of 25.2 miles of physical activity, and then they complete the last mile of their “marathon” with this morning’s event.
The Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, which was held at the Finish Line Festival powered by Cleveland Brothers in Point State Park, was also a place of pure joy and laughter as more than 500 toddlers ages 10 months to four-years-old participated in their first race and earned their first medal alongside their parents.
Later at the Festival, the Pittsburgh Pet Walk Fueled by Pro Plan ended the day on a high note as more than 250 humans and their four-legged best friends covered a one-mile course in Point State Park. The walk raised $4,300, benefiting Animal Friends. Click here to view and download photos from Saturday’s event. For more information, go to: www.thePittsburghMarathon.com.
