2015 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame Class
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the Hall of Fame Committee inducted Mary Alico, Mike Radley, Terry Stanley and Eric Wilkins as its seventh class of inductees to the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame.
This class was inducted during the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events.
Mary Alico
Graduated from Indiana High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1989), and is now living in Boulder, Colorado. Mary competed in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. Her highest placing was 19th at the 1988 Trials held in Pittsburgh, with a time of 2:38:19. Alico was ranked 7th in 1996 and 10th in 1997, by Track and Field news as this country’s top marathoner. In 1997, she placed 3rd at the U.S. National Championship to earn her a spot in the World Championships held in Athens, Greece. In 1997, she finished 3rd at the Twin Cities marathon in 2:36:09. Alico set a lifetime best of 2:32:42 in a winning performance at the Grandma’s Marathon in 1996, a time that is the second fastest run on this very competitive race to that date. In the 2001 Pittsburgh Marathon, she finished 5th with a 2:45:02. Alico ran the Cal international Marathon in 1989 with a 2:36:26. Alico still competes at a high level, in 2012 she placed 4th at the National Master’s Cross Country; this is but one of many outstanding efforts.
Mike Radley
Graduated from South Side Catholic and the University of Pittsburgh (1977), and is now living in Brookline, PA. Radley is best known for his outstanding leadership in the Pittsburgh Great Race, a post he held for 26 years before his retirement as Director of City Parks. Radley has held key positions with the Marathon as coordinator and liaison of city functions on marathon weekend. He has been involved in every Pittsburgh Marathon since its inception in 1985, insuring the City of Pittsburgh’s support. Radley is widely known in the running community as a key figure behind nearly every City of Pittsburgh race. He continues to support and provide expertise to both the Marathon and Great Race, even throughout his retirement.
Terry Stanley
Graduated from Ridgeway High School and Mansfield University of PA (1974), and is now living in Eldred, PA (McKean County). Stanley has a personal best of 2:17:34 set in a winning performance at the 1981 Penn Relays. Stanley qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials with a 2:18:57. He set the ‘still standing’ course record at the Erie Marathon of 2:19:27 in 1978, an event he also won in 1977 with a 2:23:25, again in 1990 and in 2005 with a 2:46:39 at the age of 53. In 1979, Stanley finished 14th for the U.S. team at the World Cup Marathon. That same year he ran a 2:19:40 in Boston. He is also a two-time winner of the Skylon Marathon in Buffalo, NY, with a 2:18:57 in 1981 and repeat winner in 1982. Stanley is a four-time winner of God’s Country Marathon, with wins in 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1988. Stanley is one of only a very small number of U.S. runners to have run sub 3:00 in five different decades. Stanley holds the World Record for the longest time span in winning marathons 1978 to 2012.
Eric Wilkins
Graduated from Moon Area High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1981), and is now living in Scott Township, PA. Wilkins set his personal best at the 1983 Boston Marathon with 2:23:02. Wilkins was a regular in the Pittsburgh Marathon in the earlier years, placing 19th with a 2:30:40 in 1985, and in 1986 he placed 14th with a 2:31:15, in 1989 he earned his highest placing at 10th with a 2:25:23, and he had a 20th place finish in the 1991 event. Wilkins is still a top Grand Master Runner and one of the area’s top triathlon competitors. Wilkins competed in the 2003 and 2013 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii and finished third in his age group at the 2013 North American Ironman Championships in Mount Tremblant, Canada.
